Low-income parents: involvement in college application process helps attendance rates

As reported in Inside Higher Ed, Deborah M. Warnock, a sociologist at the University of Washington, found that:

  1. Students are more likely to enroll in college if their families are more involved in the process with encouragement and financial information. 
  2. Low-income parents tended to be less aware of available financial aid.

U of Mich Study: Depressed students twice as likely to drop out

University of Michigan professor Daniel Eisenberg reports that depression has two symptoms — loss of interest and pleasure in activities, or depressed mood.  However, only loss of interest is associated with lower grade-point averages and higher drop out rates.  Students reporting depression coupled with anxiety were especially at risk for lower grades.    read more »

Newsweek suggests 5 ways that Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan can simplify FASFA, including reducing it to a waiver that allows schools to get everything they need from the IRS.
