Latinos and Education: Explaining the Attainment Gap

Latino schooling in the U.S. has historically been characterized by high dropout rates and low college completion rates1. According to a national survey of 2,012 Latinos ages 16 and older by the Pew Hispanic Center, nearly three-quarters (74%) of all 16- to 25-year-old survey respondents cut their education short because of the need to support a family.  read more »

Central New Mexico's Emergency funds helps students stay enrolled

Students who got emergency funds from Central New Mexico College's Rust Opportunity Fund were retained at nearly 20% higher rates than first-time students, according to an article in today's Inside Higher Ed.  Awards averaged just over $400 in 2008 for the 244 recipients.   read more »

Culver has delivered this talk 7 or 8 years in a row but acknowledges that most of us are not really rookies. 

Early points: Has retention really been defined?  If retention is everybody’s job, it is nobody’s job.

Aside:  Retention is not what we do – it is an outcome of what we do.  Retention = outcome of quality programs and services.  Don’t let IPEDS get in the way of measuring your more direct outcomes.  read more »
